volume (m³) = length × width × (depth_cm ÷ 100) topsoil (tonnes) = volume × 1.3 (t/m³) bags = ⌈volume ÷ 0.04⌉ (40 L bags) topsoil cost = volume × price per m³
FAQ
- How do I calculate how much topsoil I need?
- Multiply the bed area by the depth (in metres) to get the volume in cubic metres. This calculator converts your depth in centimetres for you, and also shows the weight and number of bags.
- How much does a cubic metre of topsoil weigh?
- Screened topsoil weighs about 1.3 tonnes per cubic metre. Wet or clay-heavy soil is heavier.
- How deep should topsoil be?
- For new lawns, 100–150 mm of topsoil is typical; for garden beds and vegetables, 200–300 mm gives roots room to grow.
- How many bags of topsoil in a cubic metre?
- A 40-litre bag holds about 0.04 m³, so roughly 25 bags make up one cubic metre. For anything more than a few m³, bulk (loose) delivery is cheaper.
